Details
The Bryant Arts Center addition and renovation project consisting of 45,000 SF with a budget of $14 million was completed after 24 months of construction. Originally called Cleveland Hall, the building was constructed in 1904 and included a men’s gymnasium, swimming pool, auditorium, library and meeting rooms. In the late 1970’s, the structure was converted to house the studio art department. In this recent renovation the only portions of the original building that remained were the perimeter walls and the roof structure. The interior floor structures, walls, ceilings, and mechanical / plumbing / electrical materials were demolished and recycled. Now completed, the six story Bryant Arts Center, is drastically transformed, providing more space and greater functionality to meet the needs of the University.

JHA coordinated design efforts including meeting design requirements for LEED certification with the architects, construction manager, structural engineer, and MEP engineer. JHA’s portion of the project consisted of the site development and construction plans for three building additions and renovation work on an existing building for the art school. JHA’s design included offsite water and chilled waterline extensions, modification to the grading and earthwork grading plans, sanitary sewer and storm sewer design, steam tunnel relocation, pavement, parking, curbs, sidewalks and stairways. We also performed the land surveying including the boundary and topographic survey necessary for the design plans. One of the many critical aspects presented to the project team on this building was the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) construction. After going through the certification process with the United States Green Building Commission, the project earned 44 of a possible 69 points qualifying it for LEED GOLD certification!

The waterline extension consisted of an 8” waterline extension from the chiller bunker to the renovated facility that was located in the centerline of the roadway. This project included phased construction and sensitivity to pedestrian and vehicle traffic as well as accommodating the university during the school year. All work was also designed to be sensitive to the historical and aesthetic considerations of the University and Village.
