This project will renovate five student housing facilities in the south campus area and construct two additions. JHA served as the civil engineer and land surveyor under the Architect of Record. The project will renovate Park, Smith, Steeb, Siebert and Stradley Halls, construct connector additions between Stradley and Park and between Smith and Steeb, and construct a chilled water plant beneath the Park and Stradley connector. The additions will be 11 stories and provide a total of approximately 360 new beds. The project will be multi-phased and fast-tracked with some building packages being released as early as July 2010.
Jobes Henderson coordinated all site engineering design with the landscape architect and electrical engineering consultant. Design coordination included accommodations for plans streetscape and green infrastructure improvements as well as modifying and extending the existing 13.2 KV electrical system. It will also include construction of a chilled water plant beneath the Stradley and Park connector.
Project limits for this area included 5 existing dormitories in the area of 11th, 12th, and College. The area also included the South Oval for a possible future geothermal well field. The project area is very utility and landscape intensive. JHA worked within a very short timeframe to provide the design team with a base map for planning purposes. The survey for this project consisted of locating buildings, topographic features, landscaping, roadways, and extensive utility research and locations. This survey work included a large amount of detail locations of landscaping and sidewalks as well as a very complex utility network, including steam tunnels, multiple communications carriers, gas, electrical banks and sewers. The project required an extensive utility research to be conducted with both The Ohio State University and O.U.P.S.
The civil engineering design consisted of providing design for full depth replacement of College Street between 11th and 12th Avenues. Utility relocations for sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and coordination with design team for steam tunnels, communications line, gas and electric. The utility design entailed coordination with the City of Columbus for storm and sanitary. Detailed design for walkways, pedestrian and bicycle were incorporated into overall site improvements.
The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification.
